Intro to Microbits Program by PVHS Women in STEM: The PVHS Women in STEM club is proud to provide a free after school opportunity for 5th & 6th Grade students called “Intro to Microbits”. The activities will be similar to Hour of Code, but more open-ended to encourage independent thinking among participants. This class is geared toward ALL students and every ability level is welcome – no past experience is necessary. The program will meet at each elementary school on April 4th from 1:30-3:00 p.m. For more information, please click here to reference the handout or contact Megan Vandersee (vanderseemegan@pleasval.k12.ia.us). Click here to register your student online by April 1st. The program is limited to 30 students at each elementary school.

Buddy Benches Coming this Spring:  Great job Cody!  You helped collect enough bottle caps for two Buddy Benches, one donated by the Cody PTA and one by the Davenport Optimist Club!  Be on the lookout for them outside this spring.   As of now, Cody is officially done collecting plastic bottle caps.  Thanks to all who donated!

Lost & Found:  Please remember to take a look at the lost & found tables in main hallway, there are quite a few jackets, hats and gloves waiting to be claimed.

Grounds Committee InvolvementAnyone interested, knowledgeable, or ready for spring, please join the Grounds Committee!  The committee will meet on Monday, March 26th at 2:00 p.m.to get going on the butterfly garden and sign area. There will be talk of ideas, plan making, and even some work done. There will also be discussion of taking bids for professional rework of Hopewell sign area. April PTA Meeting Date ChangeThe PTA meeting scheduled for Thursday, April 19th at 6:30 p.m. has been moved to Tuesday, April 17th at 6:30 p.m. so that families can enjoy Fine Arts Night at Hopewell.  Thanks!

Visiting Author:  Every other year, Pleasant Valley Elementary Schools have had the unique opportunity to host a visiting author sponsored by the school district and PTAs. This year we are pleased to announce Sarah Weeks, a well-known children’s author, will be at Hopewell on Thursday, April 19th. Presentations will take place in each grade level. Sarah Weeks will be signing books for the students. As in the past, you will need to purchase your own book and send the book in to be autographed. Mrs. Bachtel has compiled a list of grade level books that could be used to choose a book for your child.  Click here to view the list and select the best book for your reader!

Pleasant View Literacy Day Volunteers Needed: Pleasant View is having its annual literacy day to celebrate reading! On this day students will meet with their character circles and visit four literacy stations. Volunteers are needed to run and clean-up a literacy station. All supplies and directions will be provided. Volunteers will need to arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. and stay until 11:15 a.m. on April 4th. PTA Meeting and Minutes: The minutes for the March PTA meeting are published for you to read on the PTA website.  The next PTA meeting is on Monday, April 9th at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria!

Riverdale Heights

Riverdale Heights Junior Achievement Volunteers Needed:  JA is looking for more volunteers for Riverdale Heights! Typically a volunteer commits to teaching 5-7 classes that are 30-45 minutes long.  They can work with the teachers to determine how often they want to have the class (normally 1 per week).  JA provides you with all the classroom materials at no cost, and they include step-by-step instructions on how to teach each lesson.  Volunteers may work alone or in pairs.  First-time volunteers will complete a 1 hour training session before entering the classroom. More information can be found by clicking here.  The following are the classrooms in need of volunteers:  Olivia Day’s 5th Grade and Mike Strobbe’s 5th Grade.  Contact Jake Fieseler with questions at jake.fieseler@ja.org.

Strength, Speed, & Agility Training: Pleasant Valley Jr. High School is providing an opportunity for your 7th/8th grade son/daughter to participate in a developmental strength, speed, and agility program beginning on March 26th and ending on May 2nd. The program’s instructors, Mike Duncan and Jason Vice, will be leading each session in the high school weight room from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  Click here for more information and for registration.

PVJH Weight Training Information: The PVHS Gym has been reserved for JH weight training on M/Wed from 6:15-6:45 p.m. & the weight room from 6:15-7:30 p.m. W1 (west teacher lot) will be open at 5:55 p.m. for student entry. The same drop off and pick up protocol as last year will be used. Please see below:

  • Due to major construction, please follow Pleasant Valley High School temporary guidelines when dropping off and picking up your JH student from weight lifting club. Please use the west lot just behind the cafeteria and theater area. Students will walk through the PVHS to the gym area. Please save normal parking spaces in case of another HS event. The coaches are requesting the athletes arrive a few minutes early and be ready to work out in the weight room promptly at 6:15 p.m.Thank you for your cooperation.

PVJH Summer Washington D.C. Trip:  All students going on this summer’s Washington D.C. trip need to stop by Ms. Larsen’s room (room 33) to sign up for rooming assignments.  Anyone who has not come to sign up by Thursday, March 29th will be assigned roommates by the chaperones.

Sports Lunch and Learn:  If your student has interest in a career in any sports field, encourage them to attend the Sports Lunch and Learn on March 28th from 11:30 a.m. – 1:05 p.m. in the Theatre! The line-up of presenters includes: U of I, local colleges, Harvie Herrington-former Pro & Arena Football Player, KWQC Sports Broadcasters, staff from a local sports team to talk about the business side of sports, and others!  Students can sign up in the Career Center.  Contact Mary Johnson with questions at johnsonmary@pleasval.k12.ia.us.

PVHS PTA Right After Prom Donations: Pleasant Valley High School PTA is very proud to sponsor one of the best after-prom parties in the area and typically hosts nearly 500 students each year. This success is a direct credit to the generous support received from the community and parents.
