Elementary Curriculum Night:  Head to your student’s elementary school for Elementary Curriculum Night on Tuesday, September 11th!  The evening will consist of discussion focused on supports for learners, tips for good communication between school/home, classroom culture, schedule, procedures, homework, and more. You can preview curriculum presentations on the district website by clicking here and looking under Curriculum and Instructions – Overviews by Grade Level.  The schedule for the evening is as follows:

  • 6:15 – 6:40 Session I: Homeroom teachers will present general information and answer parent questions
  • 6:40 – 6:55 Specials teachers (Art, Music, PE, Science, Library/Technology)
  • 6:55 – 7:20 Session II: Homeroom teachers will present general information and answer parent questions

PTA Reflections Program:  PVCSD is excited to announce the 2018-2019 Reflections theme “Heroes Around Me.”  Currently the Iowa PTA website is not updated, but please check the website for any updates in regards to rules and regulations by clicking here.  Students may start working on their projects in the categories literature, dance, visual arts, photography, music composition, and film production. Entries will be due October 24th and 25th. More details to follow soon!

Genesis Flu-Free Quad Cities Program: In October, Genesis will offer FREE seasonal flu vaccines to PV students in grades K-6. Click here to access the consent forms that will also come home with students next week.  Forms should be returned if you would like your child to receive a free flu vaccine.

6th Grade Choir: The Pleasant Valley Community School District offers a 6th Grade Choir to all 6th grade students in the district beginning Wednesday, October 17th. 6th Grade Choir provides students with an opportunity to participate in a large group choral ensemble, explore their singing voice, and sing a wide variety of music. This experience is designed for students who love to sing and want to improve their singing voice as well as their ability to read music. Click here for full details and registration information!

PV Spirit Driveway Painting: We’ve got spirit, how about you?! If you are interested in adding PV Spirit to your driveway, PV Platinum has the thing for you!  The Platinum Dance Team is coordinating driveway painting of the PV logo throughout the district this fall. For $25, Platinum Dancers will paint the PV logo on your driveway – adding some Spartan Spirit to your home. Dates and times will be coordinated closer to the date, and all driveways will be completed by the end of September/first part of October. Deadline for orders will be September 23rd.  Interested in signing up, please email Sue Speich at sspeich@hotmail.com

QC Symphony Youth Choir Auditions: The Quad City Symphony Youth Choir is holding auditions this fall! The Youth Choir is an exciting opportunity for students with unchanged voices in grades two through eight.  The Youth Choir handbook, audition guidelines and other useful information can be found on the Quad City Symphony Orchestra website under Education/Youth Ensembles.  Please email Chelsea Schwarzfopf at cschwarzkopf@qcso.org to set up an audition time, and click here for full details!

Rock Island Arsenal Rocktoberfest: The Rock Island Arsenal is hosting a Rocktoberfest family event on September 28th at 3:00 p.m. and you’re invited! This event is open to the public, so Island access restrictions will be waved and passes will not be required.  There will be bounce houses, kid’s activities, balloon animals, and face painting.  Click here for full details!

Upcoming Health Screenings:  The following health screenings for elementary students will be done in the month of September during one of their regularly scheduled gym classes.

  1. Height and Weight – all students
  2. Vision- 1st and 5th graders
  3. Blood Pressure- 6th

These screenings should NOT replace regular checkups with your health care provider. If you would like to decline these screenings, please submit a written note to your student’s PE teacher or school nurse. Vision screenings for kindergarten and grade 3 students are required; An Iowa Certificate of Vision Screening should be submitted at the onset of the school year.

The AEA will conduct hearing screens later this month for K-2, 5th and all new children to the district. You will be notified of any concerns resulting from these screenings.

Fall Frolic Volunteering:  The PTA needs volunteers to help Fall Frolic, on September 21st, run smoothly.  Please click here to sign up!

Hopewell Harmony:  Hopewell Elementary is thrilled to offer a 4th and 5th grade choir for the 2018-2019 school year. The ensemble is designed to create another opportunity for our students to express their love of music. The choir will be directed by Ms. Casey and will perform several times throughout the year including Winter Program, Fine Arts Night, and a Quad City Storm hockey game. The choir will meet every Tuesday after school from 3:00-3:45pm.  All transportation is the responsibility of the parent.  Rehearsals will begin on Tuesday September 18, 2018. Each student will pay $10 to cover the cost of their T-Shirt.   To sign up, please do the following:

Elementary Yoga: Fostering cooperation and compassion, children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves. Hopewell will be hosting an after school YOGA program to run Sept 14, 21, 28; Oct. 12 and 19; November 2,9,16,30. Sessions will run from 3:05- 3:50 p.m. daily. There is a one- time $10 per student that covers materials.  Extra funds or donations will be directed to Hopewell Harvest proceeds.  There is room for 40 students and names will be drawn via lottery.  Sign up ends Monday at 3:00 p.m.  Click Here to Register!

Bus Rules and Reminders: Now that the school year has started, it’s important to share the expectations that PV bus drivers have for kids who ride the bus to and from school each day.  Each driver goes over these rules at the beginning of the year and as necessary throughout the school year.  If your child rides the bus, please click here and take a few minutes of time to review these expectations with your child or children.  Thanks for supporting our safety expectations, our bus drivers and your children.

Parking Lot Procedures: Please take some time to review the parking procedures as well as pick-up/drop-off zone and bus zone procedures at Pleasant View.  As a reminder, cars should not be entering the bus zone between 8:00am-8:30am or between 2:45pm-3:15pm.   Click here to access videos and other helpful information about parking lot procedures at Pleasant View.  Pleasant View’s goal remains to provide for the safety of the students and also to have an efficient flow of traffic.  Please come to Principal Steven Cotton with questions and suggestions to improve safety and efficiency goals.

Pleasant View Fall Fest:  Please click here to VOLUNTEER for this fun fundraising event on Friday, October 5. This family-friendly carnival is the main fundraising event for the Pleasant View PTA. 100% of the money raised goes directly to the teachers. The PTA needs YOU to make Fall Fest a success!  The event also needs candy donations.  Please consider donating a bag of peanut-free candy for prizes.  Drop your bag in the large wrapped gift box marked “Fall Fest Candy” in the school lobby.  Please see a list of peanut-free candy below for ideas.

1st PTA Meeting of the Year: Mark your calendars for our first PTA meeting of the year! Please join us at 6:30 p.m., Riverdale Heights Library on September 18th!  Pizza and Childcare will be provided.

Riverdale Heights’ Harmonics: Does your 4th or 5th grader love to sing?  Encourage them to join the Riverdale Heights’ Harmonics!  The Harmonics is a 4th and 5th grade choir designed to create another opportunity for Riverdale students to express their love of music.  The group will perform several times throughout the year at assemblies, Winter Program, Fine Arts Night, and various community events. Harmonics rehearsal for girls will be held every Monday from 3:00-4:00 p.m., and the boys will rehearse Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m.  If there is early dismissal, boys will rehearse in the morning before school at 8:00 a.m.  *Note: Wednesday 9/12 is an early out so boys will rehearse at 8:00 A.M. for their first rehearsal.  Please e-mail Mr. Connell @ connellkeaton@pleasval.k12.ia.us with questions!

Genesis Flu-Free Quad Cities Program: In October, Genesis will offer FREE seasonal flu vaccines to PV students in grades K-6. Click here to access the consent forms that will also come home with students next week.  Forms should be returned if you would like your child to receive a free flu vaccine.

6th Grade Choir: The Pleasant Valley Community School District offers a 6th Grade Choir to all 6th grade students in the district beginning Wednesday, October 17th. 6th Grade Choir provides students with an opportunity to participate in a large group choral ensemble, explore their singing voice, and sing a wide variety of music. This experience is designed for students who love to sing and want to improve their singing voice as well as their ability to read music. Click here for full details and registration information!

PV Spirit Driveway Painting: We’ve got spirit, how about you?! If you are interested in adding PV Spirit to your driveway, PV Platinum has the thing for you!  The Platinum Dance Team is coordinating driveway painting of the PV logo throughout the district this fall. For $25, Platinum Dancers will paint the PV logo on your driveway – adding some Spartan Spirit to your home. Dates and times will be coordinated closer to the date, and all driveways will be completed by the end of September/first part of October. Deadline for orders will be September 23rd.  Interested in signing up, please email Sue Speich at sspeich@hotmail.com

Bettendorf Public Library Teen Reading Challenge: Calling 6th-12th Graders!  Join the Bettendorf Public Library’s Teen Reading Challenge!  TRC is a competitive reading challenge between Bettendorf Public Library and other public libraries in the area (Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and many others). To participate, teens need to sign up, choose the challenge, and start logging minutes once the program begins.  Click here for full details on the program and the awesome prizes available!

QC Symphony Youth Choir Auditions: The Quad City Symphony Youth Choir is holding auditions this fall! Rock Island Arsenal Rocktoberfest: The Rock Island Arsenal is hosting a Rocktoberfest family event on September 28th at 3:00 p.m. and you’re invited! This event is open to the public, so Island access restrictions will be waved and passes will not be required.  There will be bounce houses, kid’s activities, balloon animals, and face painting.  Click here for full details!

Iowa Select Volleyball Clinics: Calling all 4th-6th grade volleyball players!  Iowa Select Volleyball club is hosting 6 volleyball clinics in the month of September on Sundays and Thursdays at the LeClaire Rec Center.  Click here for more info and to register! Clinic dates are as follows:

  • Sundays:  Sept 9, 16, 30 – 6:00-8:00pm

Entries will be due October 24th and 25th. More details to follow soon!
