Serving Up Support: Spartan Assembly Fighting Hunger in the Quad Cities

Pickleball Scramble Flyer

Pleasant Valley’s Spartan Assembly is getting ready to host its 3rd Annual Pickleball Scramble—a unique, fun, and meaningful way to unite students, families, and the entire community around a shared goal: fighting hunger.

Lauren Durick (Class of 2027), a member of Spartan Assembly, explains the inspiration behind the event. “We wanted this to be more than just a fundraiser. Pickleball is such a popular, inclusive sport that brings people of all ages together. The tournament is about creating memories, building community, and supporting a truly important cause.”

That cause is the Student Hunger Drive, a friendly but impactful competition between area schools to support the River Bend Food Bank. Funds raised help provide food to local families facing food insecurity—a reality affecting 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 5 children in our community.

Last year’s tournament drew an enthusiastic crowd of students, parents, and community members. Dozens of teams competed in age-based divisions, with matching uniforms, choreographed handshakes, and plenty of laughter proving that giving back can be fun, too. Lauren emphasizes that you don’t have to play pickleball to make a difference. “Whether you donate food, share the event, or tell a friend, every act helps. Even small gestures have a big impact. It’s about leadership, teamwork, and caring for others.”

She also shared her gratitude for the ongoing community support. “Every single donation brings us closer to a hunger-free community. Thank you for standing with us and showing what PV pride is all about.”
