Pleasant Valley High School students had the unique opportunity to learn directly from Iowa Chief Justice Susan Christensen on Tuesday, September 16.
Chief Justice Christensen, a Harlan native, has served on the Iowa Supreme Court since 2018 and was selected as Chief Justice in 2020. With a background spanning private practice, district court service, and leadership on numerous state committees, she shared her journey with American Government students, offering insights into her path to becoming the state’s top justice. Students heard first-hand about her experiences, her passion for family and children’s law, and the role of the judiciary in Iowa.
Later that evening, the Iowa Supreme Court held oral arguments at Bettendorf High School’s Performing Arts Center. The event, open to the public, began with an explanation of the appellate process before the justices heard oral arguments in a live case. Following the proceedings, community members had the chance to meet the justices during a public reception.
This special day provided both students and community members with a rare, up-close look at the state’s highest court in action and highlighted the value of civic education in preparing the next generation of leaders.
