Winter is Coming! Prepare Now!

Inclement Weather Protocols

As we begin to prepare for the upcoming winter weather, below are the protocols we have in place for the Pleasant Valley Community School District.

Delaying, Early Release, or Cancellation Due to Weather

School may be delayed, released early, or canceled when weather conditions (fog, rain, snow, or other natural elements) make the roads unsafe. Since weather conditions may vary around the school district and change quickly, decisions will be based upon the most up-to-date information available from various sources.

Information that will lead to decisions include:

  • Consultation with the National Weather Service
  • Driving/road conditions throughout the entire district (both paved and unpaved roads)
  • Conversations with local school districts
  • Conversations with our transportation provider, Durham School Services
  • Conversations with the district operations team regarding plowing or parking lot clearing times when snow and ice are involved
  • Conversations with Scott County and the City of Bettendorf regarding plow times

Wind Chill Warning - please note when there is a wind chill warning (not a wind chill advisory), schools in the area will delay the start of school if the warning will expire within the first couple hours of the school day.  If the warning will extend later into the morning, then school may be canceled for the day.  If the school day is canceled, the day will be rescheduled (see the procedure listed below).

Weather Notifications:

Families will be notified of a delay, early release, or cancellation in the following ways:

  1. Phone Call
  2. Text Message
  3. Email from Enews
  4. Pleasant Valley-branded social media (facebook and Twitter)
  5. Pleasant Valley website
  6. Local media, including radio, websites, and television

Please take the time now to check your contact information in the School Messenger system. See instructions here. This is the information we use to contact you during inclement weather days.  If you need to change your contact information, please do so through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal or by contacting your building administrative assistant.

Making Up a Canceled School Day:

Due to state legislation, virtual weather/snow days are not permitted. Therefore, we are operating under the approved 2021-2022 school calendar.

Currently, we have no school on Friday, February 18, 2022. As in the past, if school is canceled due to inclement weather on or before Friday, February 11, 2022, Pleasant Valley Schools will run an early dismissal schedule on Friday, February 18. This will allow for the missed learning day to be made up and still allow for the planned teacher Professional Development scheduled that afternoon.

If more than one inclement weather day occurs on or before February 11th or after February 11th, the day(s) will be added to the end of the school year beginning with Friday, June 3, 2022.

Elementary Outdoor Recess

Students will have outdoor recess when the temperature is 0 degrees or above. If the temperature (windchill included) is less than 0 degrees, students will stay inside for recess. Please have your children dress for the weather (coats, gloves or mittens, hats, and boots if necessary).
