Pleasant View 1st Graders Learn and Give Back

Pleasant View 1st Graders had a very special experience.  After reading the story "The Water Princess," students met over Zoom with the woman the story was based on, Georgie Badiel-Liberty. Ms. Badiel has her own foundation that builds, restores, and maintains wells in Africa.  Students held a donation drive and gave the foundation $1,000!

She thanked our superheroes for all of the money they raised. She also shared that the funds will go towards building a well at a school in Burkina Faso, Africa. They learned if schools have a well, then parents will allow their children to go to school and receive an education because they know their children will bring buckets of water home each day. If schools do not have a well, then many children, particularly girls, need to spend the day walking with their mother or other women in the village to the well to bring back enough water for their families.

"This experience brought much joy and energy to our students' learning and it gave them the understanding that they have the ability to impact and INTERACT with others in meaningful ways." First Grade Teacher Kristin Foley said.
